After several months of close collaboration between CETYS University and Astronaut Dr. José Hernández, engineering students at CETYS have started an ambitious project: satellites with the technology capable of measuring weather from space.

The goal: These will orbit Earth to more than 48 miles by the year 2020.

This is part of the project CETYS Aerospace and Advanced Technologies Group, where 20 students from the programs of engineering in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electronic Cybernetics, and Software participate with the guidance of Dr. Hernández, to develop this technology.

“We are working with CETYS University in creating components for this satellite system. This experience helps students to bring designs and ideas from paper to action, and then built a satellite that will be launched into space. It’s fundamental that engineering students live this experience” said Dr. Hernández.

As part of his visit, Dr. Hernández gave the conference Cosechador de Estrellas to more than 800 high school students from all over Tijuana, a lecture brought by CETYS and PIMSA.

Dr. Hernández told students about his life before working at NASA, where things were not as easy as they are today, considering that he and his family had to migrate to the United States in order to have better opportunities. It was in the fields of California where he had his first job.

“I’m the example that dreams can come true, but hard work is always necessary. My advice for young students: you must settle on goals and prepare yourselves with a professional career, never stop believing in yourself and the power of studying. I was rejected by NASA not once, but eleven times, but I never give up”.

“Our Institution looks forward to bring success stories to students, and get a positive impact for all. Our guest is proof that hard work, sacrifices, and higher education can move the world”said Jessica Ibarra, Dean for the Tijuana and Ensenada Campus at CETYS University.

These lectures are possible thanks to PIMSA and the Distinguished Chairs Program of CETYS University, where students can receive knowledge in specific areas, as part of the mission of CETYS as one of the top leader institutions in Mexico in global competitiveness.
