Eleven students and two professors from Johnson & Wales University in the United States recently participated in an internationalization program hosted by CETYS University’s International Campus in Ensenada. The program’s objective was to educate students on the latest trends in the hospitality, tourism, wine, and restaurant industries developed in Ensenada, equipping them with tools to become global hospitality administrators.

Students from Johnson & Wales University’s hospitality campuses in Charlotte, Denver, and Providence sought to learn about management practices and strategies employed by hotels, restaurants, and wineries in the Baja California region. The program was designed to enrich their competencies and knowledge in hotel management and development.

To complement their studies, the program included lectures on economic development, business, Mexican culture, as well as tourism, and the history of wine. The students were also given a training session for WSET Level 1 certification at CETYS University Center for Wine Studies (CEVIT).

Dr. Carlos Gonzalez, Director of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness for the CETYS University System, shared that this was the third time Johnson & Wales University students and top executives had participated in the program at the Ensenada Campus.

«The eleven students who visited us are about to graduate from the Hospitality Management program. This international program was developed at CETYS as part of a subject in which visiting students research the location they visit throughout a semester,» highlighted Dr. Carlos Gonzalez.

For Jane Boyland, an academic from Johnson & Wales University, the participation of her students in international programs is critical because it prepares them to become global managers and allows them to appreciate how hospitality is delivered in other countries, in this case, Mexico.

«This experience is enriching because we can learn about best practices, challenges, and success stories from different places. Ensenada is a site where we can appreciate tourism, quality in hospitality, and great hotel development in the area, all of which allows us to see a different perspective than what we have in our country,» she added.

For student Hannah Bernard, based at the Providence Campus, this experience allows her to strengthen skills that will positively impact her future professional career. «In addition to the entire program, getting to know Mexico and its people is very exciting; Ensenada is a fantastic place, and CETYS has contributed to making this experience wonderful.»

With this program, CETYS Ensenada reaffirms its commitment to being an international campus that offers programs with strategic lines for the region’s development, attracting visitors who identify the state as a development hub, particularly in the tourism sector. Additionally, the program reinforces ties with Johnson & Wales University in the United States and strengthens CETYS University’s linkage with the business sector.
