The mental well-being of teenagers and young adults is of critical concern today. Navigating the adolescent and youth stage proves to be a pivotal and challenging journey, marked by a spectrum of physical, emotional, and social changes.

At present, an estimated 20% of the young and adolescent population is believed to confront various forms of mental disorders. Adding to the intrinsic challenges of mental health is the considerable influence of social stigma.

Dr. Arturo Ron, Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Neuropsychology at CETYS University, International Campus in Ensenada, notes that despite the continuous rise in the incidence of mental disorders among the youth, stigmatizing attitudes toward these conditions endure. With the increasing prevalence of mental health issues, it is estimated that approximately half of those experiencing these disorders have faced some form of stigmatization or discrimination.

«When we talk about stigma, we refer to the discrimination and negative prejudice faced by individuals with mental disorders due to a lack of understanding, fear, or societal stereotypes. This stigma can significantly accentuate the impact of mental disorders on the individual’s life,» explains Dr. Arturo Ron.

Furthermore, the CETYS expert notes that stigma can manifest in various ways, including social exclusion, mockery, lack of support, or even discrimination in social, familial, educational, and workplace settings. Individuals facing stigma may feel ashamed or guilty about their condition, posing challenges in seeking proper help and treatment. This, in turn, can contribute to the exacerbation of symptoms and increased social isolation, intensifying the overall situation.

«To address this issue, it is essential to promote education and awareness about mental health in society at large. This can help challenge stereotypes and prejudices associated with mental disorders and foster a more understanding and supportive environment. Additionally, it is crucial for educational institutions and workplaces to implement inclusive policies and provide support for individuals with mental disorders, ensuring they feel secure and supported in pursuing necessary treatment and leading fulfilling lives despite their conditions,» shares Dr. Arturo Ron.

Finally, the CETYS expert emphasizes that mitigating the stigma surrounding mental health requires a collective effort. This joint effort not only alleviates the emotional and psychological challenges faced by young individuals with mental disorders but can also significantly impact their ability to adapt to their environment and improve their treatment prognosis.
