José Helio Lozano-Mateos, a Computer Science Engineering student at CETYS Mexicali, and Marisela Verónica Vega-Meza, an International Public Accounting student at CETYS Tijuana, were awarded the 2023 CETYS CityU Presidential Scholarships 2023. Now they have the opportunity to continue their Dual Degree program at both CETYS University and City University of Seattle.

This scholarship was established in 2005, when both institutions agreed to collaborate in preparing students like José Helio and Marisela, who are ready for the binational challenges that identify this region, with the benefit of graduating with a Dual Degree in the United States and Mexico. The financial aid was awarded in a ceremony by Dr. Randy Frisch, President of the City University of Seattle, and Dr. Fernando León-García, President of the CETYS University System.

“I want to congratulate Marisela and José Helio, an example of high-quality students who join the program. They will obtain the best higher education from these two great universities, as well as a global experience, which is one of the goals of studying a Dual Degree, teaching how small the world is and how we can reach out to each other, as well as continuing to instill in students a desire to learn throughout their lives,” said Dr. Randy Frisch.

Dr. Fernando León-García recalled that the synergy between the institutions benefits great talents like these students and provides them with international experiences, which for a region like CaliBaja, will afford them greater opportunities and global solutions.

«My thanks to Dr. Frisch and CityU for continuing with this program and recognizing an excellent path to knowledge and student achievement. Congratulations particularly to José Helio and Marisela, their family, and friends,» said the CETYS president.

With José Helio and Marisela, 40 students have benefited from the Presidential Scholarships CETYS-City University of Seattle. This 2023 marks 18 years of academic collaboration.

“This scholarship represents much more than the projects and tasks we finish late at night. It represents the support of our loved ones, who accompany us in every step we take, in an experience that transcends borders. It will allow us to think outside the box or the confines of a computer screen, establishing connections with passionate professors, something that we hardly would find in textbooks, and with friends from other programs whose perspectives open your mind,” mentioned José Helio.

The CETYS Dual Degree program is relevant for the region since students earn a Mexican and an American degree that broadens their professional profile and allows them to develop solutions to specific problems that will benefit their community and those beyond the borders.
