During the ceremony, Dr. Fernando León García, Rector of the CETYS University System, was recognized as a key player in the growth and consolidation of this global strategy. In his remarks, he highlighted the forward-looking vision that gave rise to this collaboration and reaffirmed CETYS’s commitment to developing leaders with an international reach.
«What began as a cross-border experiment is now a binational ecosystem of innovation, collaboration, and student success that has been shared in forums such as NAFSA (Association of International Educators), HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities), and AMPEI (Mexican Association for International Education),» he expressed.
Since its beginning in 2005, this partnership has offered CETYS students the opportunity to earn a dual degree accredited in the United States. The program started with a single bachelor’s degree and now offers options across all academic programs within the CETYS system. The most recent is the Dual Degree in Cybersecurity and various Certificates.
Suzanne Walsh, in her first event as President of City University of Seattle after taking office this summer, shared an inspiring vision for the future of global education and the impact of this binational collaboration. She also highlighted the transformative role that the alliance with CETYS has played in CityU’s expansion in Mexico, as well as the commitment to continue strengthening academic ties between the two institutions.
Currently, more than 430 CETYS University students are actively enrolled in joint programs covering areas such as business, psychology, computer science, and cybersecurity, joining a community of 1,173 alumni from Mexico, the United States, and other parts of the world. The alliance has also fostered international mobility experiences, allowing students to undertake academic stays in cities such as Athens, Bratislava, Prague, Seattle, and the three CETYS host cities in Baja California.
Among the most recent achievements, the inauguration of the CETYS Student Success Center on the Tijuana campus was highlighted. This space, sponsored by City University of Seattle, is dedicated to mentoring and supporting students in international programs, reflecting the shared commitment to student development.
The event featured participation from Minister Gerardo Javier Guiza Vargas of the Mexican Consulate in Seattle; the new president of CityU, Suzanne Walsh; and Gabriel Marcell Pereira Aguilera, a first-generation student of the dual degree in Cybersecurity, who shared a message with the attendees.
CETYS students have had multiple integrated travel experiences abroad, including Athens, Greece; Bratislava, Slovakia; and currently 195 of them are participating in various international summer programs in Prague, Czech Republic, and Seattle, Washington.
