The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), distinguished a university board outside the US for the first time in history, with its prestigious “John W. Nason Award for Board Leadership” during its National Conference held in Dallas, Texas on April 2nd.

Its recipient was Instituto Educativo del Noroeste, A.C. or IENAC, CETYS University’s Board of Trustees, which demonstrated exceptional leadership and initiative after a major earthquake that struck the university in 2010.

Sensing an opportunity to not only rebuild but create a new institutional identity, the Board adopted a new governance model to act as one board, rather than as a group of regional boards. Today, CETYS is a clear example of the benefits of having an engaged, properly oriented board sharing an audacious vision and the ethos of “One Dream, One Team.”

“When you have the honor and distinction to serve as a Board member in a University, it implies that Society relies on you. In our case, our families trust us, CETYS trusts us, our children trust us to make such endeavor the best. It is not a job, it is a calling.” shared CETYS’ Board President, Juan Ignacio Guajardo, adding that “this award or recognition, is frankly inspiring, because in effect, the IENAC Board is recognized, using Alfred Lord Tennyson’s words, as being ‘strong in will to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield’ in our quest and vision”.

“Boards are a lynchpin in institutional success and we hope that, by honoring these institutions, others will look to better themselves. These boards’ stories stood out in a climate of great change in higher education. We are impressed by their commitments to consequential governance and look forward to recognizing them at our opening session.” said AGB President Richard D. Legon.

CETYS President, Dr. Fernando León García, congratulated IENAC and stressed the importance of the support of visionary leaders committed to quality, benefitting both the institution and the border region.

Nearly 70 nominations were received describing impressive work led by boards of public and private institutions and foundations. This year, AGB honored five of them: Beacon College (Leesburg, Florida), The College of William & Mary Foundation (Williamsburg, Virginia), The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio), Whittier College (Whittier, California), and CETYS University (Baja California, Mexico).

Based in Baja California, CETYS University is one of Mexico’s premier higher education institutions and one of the few accredited by the international agency, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). CETYS is the only Mexican higher education institution to ever receive the recognition; its Board of Trustees will be recognized for strengthening its Institution and making a positive impact on its student body.
