Change and Obsolescence: How Can We Reinvent Ourselves?

No Comment Yet

Have you ever worried about becoming obsolete in the near future? Do you fear that
technology might eventually replace you in your job?
Dr. Patricia Páez, Coordinator of the Mental Health and Psychological Well-being
Program at CETYS University, explains that these concerns are part of the anxiety we
feel in response to the rapid changes in our environment. This anxiety, known as the
fear of becoming obsolete, or FOBO, arises from the swift pace of technological
advancement and social transformation. It’s the fear of losing relevance in a world
where skills, knowledge, and even entire industries can seem to disappear overnight.
«FOBO can manifest in several ways,» says Dr. Páez. «First, there’s the fear of job loss
and, consequently, financial instability, as automation and artificial intelligence continue
to replace traditional roles.»
She also points out the fear of skills becoming outdated, leading to a belief that one’s
competencies might no longer be competitive in the job market. Additionally, there’s the
anxiety about social disconnection—falling behind socially or culturally if one doesn’t
keep up with the latest trends, technologies, or ways of thinking.
FOBO can have a profound impact on mental health, contributing to chronic anxiety,
stress, low self-esteem, and even depression. It can also undermine personal identity,
especially for those who tie their self-worth to their professional or technological
expertise.
To overcome FOBO, Dr. Páez shares the following recommendations:
 Adopt a Growth Mindset: Commit to lifelong learning and embrace the idea that
growth is continuous.
 Stay Informed: Keep up with industry trends, new technologies, and the skills
needed to remain competitive.
 Cultivate Adaptability and Resilience: Accept that change is inevitable and focus
on building your ability to adjust to new situations.
 Reflect and Improve: Regularly assess your strengths and weaknesses to
identify areas where you can develop new skills or knowledge.
 Practice Mindfulness: Use mindfulness techniques to manage stress and anxiety,
keeping your focus on the present rather than on an uncertain future.
 Seek Professional Support: If FOBO is significantly impacting your mental health,
consider consulting a therapist who can help you develop strategies to cope.
«It’s natural to feel some apprehension about the future,» Dr. Páez concludes. «But by
taking proactive steps to stay relevant and adaptable, you can overcome FOBO and
thrive in a world where change is the only constant.»
