Dr. Isaac Azuz, Director of the Institute for Sustainability Studies at CETYS (INESU),
participated in the thematic forum titled «Integrating the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) into Internationalization Strategies through Research, Teaching, and
Community Actions.» The event, held at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis),
provided a platform for him to exchange experiences and knowledge on a global scale.
The forum featured workshops and discussions centered on successful strategies for
incorporating the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United
Nations (UN) within the scope of applied research. These goals are designed to
eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a
comprehensive sustainable development agenda.
«The event brought together 60 international experts in global affairs and sustainability
from universities across the United States, Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Mexico,
with CETYS University as the sole representative from Mexico. It’s noteworthy that the
University of California, Davis is ranked fifth in the UI GreenMetric international
sustainability ranking, in which CETYS University has also participated since 2022,»
remarked Dr. Azuz.
During the workshop, participants underscored the critical role universities play in
advancing the global effort to achieve the SDGs. The strategies proposed to meet the
2030 goals emphasized the importance of focusing on research, incorporating
sustainability-specific courses into academic curricula, and continuing to develop
community-benefiting initiatives.
Dr. Azuz emphasized that the growing emphasis on sustainability by employers makes
experience with the SDGs a valuable asset, leading CETYS to recommend that
graduates highlight their involvement with these goals on their resumes as a distinctive
advantage.
«Global companies have made sustainability a cornerstone of their development
strategies, which makes it increasingly important for new hires to possess not only a
general understanding of sustainability but also practical experience with one or more of
the sustainable development goals,» Dr. Azuz explained.
In his presentation, Dr. Azuz also emphasized CETYS University’s proactive role in
integrating these themes across its programs. This includes incorporating SDGs into the
Engineering Expo, embedding them in the mandatory core curriculum of all degree
programs, and launching reforestation projects such as «300×500,» launched by INESU
in 2024.
