Cougars Fall in Exhibition to CETYS Universidad Mexicali, 73-72.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team fell in an exhibition matchup to CETYS Universidad Mexicali by a final score of 73-72, Friday night at The Sports Center.

CSUSM shot 37.9 percent (25-66) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-16) from behind the arc and 76 percent (19-25) from the charity stripe. The Zorros went 48.4 percent (30-62) on field goals, 28.6 percent (4-14) on 3-pointers and 45 percent (9-20) on free throws.

Junior forward Monica Friedl led the Cougars with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Ashley Jenkins pitched in 15 points and dished out seven assists. Myriam Estela Lara Ackerman led CETYS with 41 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocks. Maria Fernanda Gil Avendar had 20 points.

The game went back-and-forth with neither team gaining complete control in the first half. The score was tied at halftime 32-32.

CSUSM was outscored in the second half 41-40 as the Zorros prevailed by one point.

The Cougars will return to conference action with a road matchup against Stanislaus State on Thursday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
