School as a promoter of psychological well-being and a space for socialitation

Since its inception in Ancient Greece, school has been recognized as a fundamental
space for developing cognitive and socio-emotional skills in individuals. Today, its role
has evolved, becoming an essential pillar for promoting psychological well-being,
particularly during childhood and adolescence, explains Dr. Karla María Díaz-López,
Academic Coordinator of the Master’s in Education at CETYS University, International
Campus in Ensenada.

From 6 to 18, Greek children were taught to become educated and ethical citizens. This
tradition of fostering both cognitive and socio-emotional development continues in
modern education, where the school is seen as a vital space for socialization and for
safeguarding psychological well-being.

In a context where preventing risks such as violence, depression, drug addiction, and
school dropout is becoming increasingly important, Díaz López emphasizes the need to
focus on students’ psychological well-being. «Psychological well-being is associated
with successful academic, personal, and professional outcomes,» she explains.

The Mexican education system, reformed five years ago, reflects this increasing
concern. The New Mexican School (NEM) places a strong emphasis on the emotional
and affective development of students. «In this new educational model, socio-emotional
resources are integrated into the expanded curriculum, covering areas like social
responsibility, personal physical care, and emotional well-being,» says Dr. Díaz López. She adds, «Emotional well-being refers to mood regulation, personal pride, healthy
relationships, and resilience in the face of adversity.»

However, despite these advances, Díaz López points out that there are still challenges
in educational practice. «The social role of the school hasn’t changed; in fact, it’s
become more complex,» she states. The CETYS expert poses critical questions
regarding how educators, from professors to administrators and families, should engage
in this mission. Among these, she asks, «What specific actions are needed? What
factors or conditions should be prioritized in educational practices? And what role does
the family play?»

Dr. Díaz López concludes that, while these questions have yet to be fully addressed by
the NEM, one thing is clear: promoting psychological well-being is a crucial issue for
schools today. Educational institutions must take on the responsibility of fostering well-
being within their communities. «Promoting or at least encouraging its development is a
responsibility schools can no longer ignore,» she asserts.
